the Akron-Summit County Public Library (ASCPL) has been an

RESPONSIBILITIES: The ASCPL is hiring a Deputy Director to support
our Mission Statement to provide resources for learning and
leisure, information services, meeting spaces, and programs for all
ages that support, improve, and enrich individual, family, and
community life. The Deputy Director assists the Executive Director
and performs a variety of administrative duties related to public
services and other supporting departments and functions. The role
oversees a large portion of the Library's day-to-day operations,
supervising the leaders of the Adult Services, Collection
Development, Security & Safety, Technical Services, Youth Services,
and Public Services (Main Library, 18 branches, and Mobile
Services) agencies. The role regularly works cross-functionally to
cultivate effective relationships with employees at all levels of
the organization, the Board of Trustees, and those outside the
organization, such as vendors. A vital goal will be collaborating
with the Facilities Services Director in helping to lead ASCPL in
$160 million of necessary capital projects to meet current and
future programmatic needs (as outlined in the 2025 Feasibility
Study) while also supporting staff to be resilient as libraries
continue to evolve in how they operate to meet community needs.
Other duties include: Serving as a key member of management who
understands the organization, financials, industry, customers, and
strategy. Supervising employees, providing direction, coaching,
training and developing, hiring, and managing performance to
organization goals and expectations. Managing budgets and resources
effectively and efficiently. Managing vendors and outside service
providers effectively, including setting expectations and holding
them accountable. Being responsible for the overall day-to-day
public service operations of Main Library and 18 branch libraries,
as well as system-wide Adult Services, Collection Development,
Security& Safety, Technical Services, and Youth Services agencies.
Analyzing community needs in order to develop and maintain
collections, programs, and services to meet those needs.
Participating in the selection process for Library management
positions. Representing the Library in regional, state, and
national library associations. Serving in the role of the Executive
Director in absence of the Executive Director. Preparing and
recommending Library public services policies, procedures,
rules/regulations, and guidelines and implements or directs their
implementation. Overseeing the development of Library operations
systems, forms, procedures, and methods of recordkeeping as related
to public services. Assuring that the Library’s public service
operations, programs, services, and activities are coordinated
system-wide, and needed resources are available. Directing the
planning process for Library programs and services for the public.
Participating in the Library’s budget process. Acting as ex-officio
member of the Marketing Communications and Library Services
Committee of the Board of Trustees. Functioning in an advisory
capacity in matters relating to Library public services management.
Serving as the primary advisor to the Executive Director and a key
advisor to the Administrative Team by providing strategic
leadership in the area of Library public services management.
Participating in decision-making and planning as a member of the
Library’s Director and Administrative teams. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Required: Master’s degree in Library and
Information Science. Eligibility for Ohio Public Librarian
Certification. At least 10 years of relevant experience. At least 5
years of supervisory experience. Knowledge of library services and
operations. Knowledge of the principles and practices of public
library administration. Knowledge of library public services,
collection development, and technical services operations.
Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws pertaining to public
library work. Knowledge of the principles of intellectual freedom
as they apply to public libraries. Skill in establishing and
maintaining system-wide standards of consistency and service
excellence. Skill in program and project management. Skill in
customer service principles, practices, and programs. Ability to
plan, implement, and manage change within the agency, division,
and/or organization. Ability to use a computer and job-related
software or systems applicable to the essential functions of the
job. Ability to work irregular hours, including evenings and
weekends. Ability to lift light objects (less than 25 pounds) and
carry them short distances (50 feet or less). A valid driver's
license, automobile insurance, and reliable personal
transportation. Preferred: Ohio Public Librarian Certification. 15
or more years of relevant experience. 7 or more years of
