and media-related portfolio pieces JOB HIGHLIGHTS POSITION PURPOSE:
Visit Detroit is seeking an organized, motivated, and proactive
Communications Intern to support media relations and group tour
initiatives across metro Detroit. This role offers hands-on
experience within a collaborative, community-focused organization
that has been telling Detroit’s story for more than 125 years. The
intern will gain exposure to media relations, tourism promotion,
and destination storytelling while supporting a variety of
communications projects and on-site activities. LOCATION &
SCHEDULE: Part-Time; Non-Exempt Summer Internship In-Office –
Detroit , MI 28-hour workweeks from April to August. Before or
during events, hours may exceed 40 hours in one week and could
involve some nights and weekends. WHAT WE REQUIRE: Valid,
unrestricted Michigan driver’s license (most positions). Interest
in communications through coursework, extracurricular activities,
or previous internships. Availability to work evenings and weekends
as needed PREFERRED: Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree
program, preferably in communications or a related field. Two years
of combined formal education and/or relevant work experience
Enrollment in or completion of a communications, public relations,
journalism, or related degree program HOW YOU’LL CONTRIBUTE: Write,
edit, and proofread press releases, media pitches, and other
communications materials Assist with planning, preparation, and
on-site support for press trips and group tour visits Monitor and
respond to media inbox inquiries, routing requests to appropriate
team members Collaborate with Communications team members on
tourism-related projects, internal communications, and departmental
initiatives Support efforts to promote metro Detroit through
research, outreach, and communications activities Research, build,
and update media lists and media kit materials Complete data entry
and administrative tasks, including maintaining accurate records in
the Visit Detroit iDSS database Assemble and distribute media kits
and gift bags, as requested OTHER CONTRIBUTIONS: Provide general
administrative support and assist with miscellaneous projects as
needed. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES: Excellent
written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to
clearly convey ideas and information Strong writing, editing, and
proofreading skills with close attention to detail; familiarity
with AP style preferred Ability to manage multiple tasks,
prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced
environment Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with
colleagues and external partners Experience managing databases and
maintaining accurate records Professional demeanor with a positive,
adaptable attitude Ability to work effectively in both in-person
and remote environments, including use of video conferencing tools
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
Ability to perform essential job functions that include extended
computer use PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Extended
periods of sitting and standing with occasional extended periods of
walking. Prolonged use of desktop/laptop computer and peripheral
equipment. Occasionally frequent bending, stooping, standing, and
carrying. Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. Must be willing to
work nights, weekends, and holidays. Occasional work outdoors in
all weather conditions.
